Is it Really Possible to Write Tons of Words Every Day?

If you are a writer, you have asked yourself this question. I know I have. Writing hundreds of words a day is HARD, even with a lot of motivation. Often we look at other writers and wonder: HOW IN THE WORLD DO THEY WRITE THAT MUCH?! How, realistically, can you write a lot of words a day? Is it even possible?

The Short Answer: Yes

I have been in both worlds. One, where I only wrote a hundred words a day and even then would only sometimes manage a sentence some days. Two, where I write at least 1K words a day if not 3K spread between several projects.

So YES, WRITING TONS OF WORDS A DAY IS POSSIBLE! And it is possible for any writer who writes small bits of words, to write thousands.

    But how

How did I go from writing only a hundred words a day to writing a thousand a day, in a few months?

Time to solve this mystery once and for all!

What Do You Have Time For?

Time and schedules have to do with how many words you can write. Because we all know, as much as we want it, we don’t have barely enough time, especially since school has started back.

So be realistic with yourself. How much time do you have to spend on writing? Ten minutes? A half an hour?

How many words can you write in that period of time?

Over time, I have found out how long it takes me to write a paragraph and how long it takes me to write 1K. On average, it takes me about 6 minutes to write a paragraph, which means it takes me an hour to write 1K.

You don’t have to do the math, but it could be really helpful to know how many words you can realistically write in the time you have set aside.

Make Writing a Priority

If you don’t think you have enough time to write, maybe you need to make more time.

Take a look at your schedule. What do you do in a day?

If writing is a priority, you can make time for it. Adjust your schedule. Maybe that means cutting something else out or maybe it means waking up earlier. But you can find time.

Maybe, when you look at your schedule and think of cutting something out, you can’t. Maybe you realize writing isn’t that big of a priority as those other things.

    That is completely fine!

But if you are serious about your writing, you might want to take some time to write.

Take it Step-by-Step

You can’t just go straight from writing a sentence a day to writing thousands. Take baby steps.

Start by writing a hundred words a day. That isn’t much. It is just a paragraph. Then add another fifty words or another hundred. Slowly, you will find it easier and easier to write larger amounts of words.

Unless you need to write more words faster, there is a harder, more time-consuming option. I started out doing the long step-by-step process. Then I skipped to this other option.

Before you decide to try this out though, I want to give you a fair warning. This is a lot harder than taking the step-by-step route, but it is faster.

You will need to block off a section of time, then open up your computer. Sit down and write a thousand words.

It will be really tough, but it pays off. Once I started writing 1K words, I realized it was much easier than I expected it to be. So push yourself a little. Make yourself sit until you type out a thousand words.

But generally, I would suggest you do the first option. It is a lot better and it can help you stay motivated for later.

Cut Out Distractions

The number one reason why I don’t get as many words on the page, is because I get distracted by other things, such as texts, messages, notifications, or getting reminded of something else I need to do.

Try to cut out distractions as much as possible. This means logging out of stuff, putting your devices on silent, and turning off notifications.

Don’t get distracted. It is hard to go back to writing after you are distracted. So keep the distractions away at all costs.

Celebrate!!!!!

Once you hit certain marks for writing that many words a day, celebrate! Get yourself ice cream or eat your favorite snack. Tell your friends! Celebrate and have fun! It is really important, because it will give you motivation to do better!

  1. I loved this post! I struggle a LOT with writing a lot of words per day – not to mention making time to write those words. This post was a good reminder for me as I step back into my school schedule to make time for writing, and take advantage of that time. Thanks!
