Hi everyone! I am so excited! Today I get to post about consistency in writing for you writers! I have struggled and do struggle with this a lot, so I have some experience. đ
So, letâs jump in and get started.
First off,
Why is it so Important to Write Consistently?
Consistency is the key to finishing projects and actually getting words on the page. While you will still make progress writing a little every day, writing consistently will let you make progress faster and make sure you wonât just procrastinate every time you get the chance to write.
It also helps you stick with a project longer. Before I started writing consistently, I only made it around five chapters in a project before setting it aside. Now that I write (or try my best) every day, I have stuck through my project all the way to 26k words (almost 27k) on my novel!
So, consistency really helps. But, how do you write consistently?
Five Tips For Writing Consistently
Here is where my tips come in. This is stuff I have learned over time from my personal experience and it really helps me!
- Make Time
This is perhaps the most obvious one. Set aside time to write. Even if you have a busy schedule, you probably could wake up earlier and write for thirty minutes. Or even five minutes! This may mean cutting back on something else you want to do, but if writing is a priority to you, you have to take time to do it.
You also have to realize that you will be too busy to write some days. Donât be hard on yourself when it happens. It happens to the best of us! I miss writing at least once a week because I am too busy. The key is not to be too hard on yourself, but still push yourself to write as often as possible.
It doesnât have to be every day (though that is what I suggest). Choose what writing schedule fits your time!
- Write Even When You Donât Want To
Even if you have time, you might not feel like writing đ. You could be reading or doing another hobby and using it as an excuse to not write. I do that so often.
When this happens, make yourself go write at least a few words. Trust me, more than likely you will end up writing more than you set out to write in the first place and be sad when you have to stop adding to your book.
- Plan Ahead
Plan ahead for your writing! This one helps me so much! Outline and plot ahead, so that when it comes time to write, you are ready to sit down and get words on the page.
Even if you donât normally outline, it can be a super helpful way to keep your ideas sorted and at the ready!
- Start a Blog! (If you don’t have one already)
This one is perhaps my favorite tip. A blog really helps keep you consistent. I have written a post a week for 27 weeks now! That is crazy awesome!
So, consider starting a blog! It can be about any topic you want to write about!
- And FinallyâŠTake a Break From the Internet
This is perhaps the greatest tip of all! So, what does this mean? Well, for me, I have a hard time concentrating on writing when I get messages and notifications. I always end up checking them even though I should be writing. đ
An easy solution to this is turning off the internet so no notifications can come through and you canât go check them with a click of a few buttons.
Go take a break from the internet, it will help you a lot!
I think that wraps up this post! I hope this helped you! So, what are your tips for writing consistently? How often do you write? Has writing consistently helped you? Would you like more writing advice posts like this in the future? Put your answers in the comment below!

Such a great post! And very helpful! I didn’t use to make a plan for writing and I found myself writing consistently for a few days, then I ended up putting it off. Now I make plans and I write better knowing exactly what I want to happen next! I often get distracted by the internet and emails, I have to turn it off when I write sometimes too. Your writing tips are always so helpful! I would love more posts like this in the future!

I’ve struggled a lot with writing consistently as wellđ, and I totally agree with all the tips. Especially ‘plan ahead’. It’s so much better to plan ahead, and outline because then you’d know exactly what you want to write and you’d struggle less with getting words on the page.
Great tips!
