Making Writing Fun Again

Writing is hard sometimes. Every writer has those moments when they just feel like writing has gotten boring and stressful.

But it shouldn’t be that way! More than likely, you began to love writing because it was fun! It was fun to create fictional people and walk alongside them in their journey. Or maybe you just loved coming up with new worlds to visit.

Writing should be fun!

So why isn’t it?

Today I am going to share with you my five tips for making writing fun again. Because, after all, writing is supposed to be fun!

  1. Lessen Up on Your Current Projects

Why is this one of my tips? Shouldn’t you be working on those novels? Well, yes. But sometimes those projects can be stressful and make writing boring. Sometimes it is good to step away from those novels and take a break.

This year, I took a writing break that took almost all summer. It was so refreshing and got me so excited to start back with writing consistently again. It helped me slow down and realize how much I missed writing. I remembered how fun writing really was.

So, if you are feeling like writing is too stressful to be fun, it may be time to step away from your current project. It may be a little hard at first, but it is a great reminder of how fun writing really is. And it gives you more time to spend on things in real life outside of your novel, which is super important.

  1. Use Sudden Bursts of Inspiration

Sometimes, we just want something fun to write. And my tip for this is to use sudden bursts of inspiration.

Often, I will just be sitting and a random idea goes through my head for a fun little conversation or an odd short story.

Then I’ll go write it.

Usually, those are the most fun things I write. I enjoy them so much!

Use your sudden ideas and inspiration for your novel or a little snippet! That can be an easy way to help writing be fun again.

  1. Write What You Want

Too many times, I find myself not having fun writing because I am writing things I don’t really want to write. Sometimes, I have to write those things, but it’s really important to write what you want to write every once and a while.

So if you want to write that scene where your two characters have a food fight, do it! If that will boost your motivation, you should totally do it.

When you feel like writing isn’t fun anymore, try writing what you want to write. Take an hour or two and write that funny scene. It’s worth it!

  1. Short Stories

Short stories are usually really fun for me to write, but not always. My suggestion is not to put a lot of pressure on yourself if you want to enjoy writing a short story. Don’t keep stressing out if the short story isn’t the best, just enjoy the process.

I have written a lot of short stories recently and when I don’t put pressure on myself, I have a lot of fun.

Short pieces are not that hard to write. Often, I also find you have a higher chance of writing a good short story the more you write short stories.

Get out your computer or notebook, write a short story, and enjoy yourself!

  1. Fanfiction

One of the biggest tips I could give you for making writing fun again is writing fanfiction. Fanfiction is one of the most fun things to write. It takes a lot of pressure and stress off writing because you already have set characters and a set world. All you have to do is sit down and write!

If you are feeling like writing isn’t fun anymore, please try out fanfiction. Give yourself a break from writing your novel and write fanfiction.

You may find yourself writing 20K or more words on it! This past year I have written 65K in fanfiction. And, even better, I had fun doing it!

Fanfiction can also help you in tons more ways, but to tell you all of them, I would have to write a whole other article. 😂

But totally try fanfiction out! It’s so fun!

I hope you can use some of these tips if you are feeling stressed with your writing or just feel like it isn’t fun anymore. These have made writing so much more fun for me!

Until next time,

  1. I love this post! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤ I know this will help me in my writing (and many other writers too!) For me, I think it will be a big help just to write down my random snippets just for the fun of it, and to write some short stories as well! Happy writing & God bless 🥰
